TCA Summer Press Tour 2013: FOX’s New Fall Shows

FOX’s Sleepy Hollow is one of my favorite pilots for the upcoming Fall TV season. This new take on the famous character, Ichobad Crain, comes from the talented co-creators/executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. I’m a huge fan of the Star Trek reboot and FOX’s Fringe, and was thrilled when I heard they were creating Sleepy Hollow for TV. Tom Mison, who plays Ichobad Crain, is fun to watch and is paired up with local Detective Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie, as they hunt down the Headless Horseman who is on a murder rampage in modern day Sleep Hollow. Abbie has had some supernatural memories of her own and believes Crain’s story when he speaks of the Headless Horseman. Orlando Jones joins the cast as Captain Irving, who doesn’t believe anything Abbie digs up about witches and the past. I’m not sure how much I love Beharie in this role, but it’s always hard to tell from just the pilot. The show looks like a mini movie, with stunning special effects and costumes to match. I hope it’s a win in the genre category for FOX.

Sleepy Hollow stars Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie, Orlando Jones, and Katia Winter.

Premieres Monday, September 16, 9pm

FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows carefree Detective Jake Peralta, played by Andy Samberg, who has to prove himself and learn to respect the badge when the precinct gets a new commanding officer, Captain Ray Holt, played by Andre Braugher. When I first heard about this show, I thought it was going to be “The Andy Samberg Show,” and didn’t think I would enjoy it. I was definitely wrong. There are a bunch of funny scenes with talented actors, and how could you not love Andre Braugher! It borders on spoofing itself, so we’ll have to see how long it takes before that happens. Hopefully it won’t. It’s a workplace comedy, but not as serious as Homicide or anything. You can definitely feel that a lot of improv made it into the show. The shows is from creator Michael Shur who brought us the wonderful Parks and Recreation, so how bad could it be?! We’ll see.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars Andy Samberg, Andre Baugher, Melissa Fumero, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz and Chelsea Peretti

FOX’s Almost Human was my second favorite pilot for the upcoming Fall TV season (first was also on FOX), and most of it has to do with the hotness of Karl Urban and Michael Ealy, but I’m also a huge J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman fan. #FringeForever!! Almost Human is sort of like I, Robot with a twist. Set 35 years in the future when all policemen are partnered with highly evolved and very humanlike robots. Urban’s character, John Kennex, is a cop that returns to the job after surviving an attack and spending months in a coma, with a synthetic artificial leg. His boss, Captain Sandra Maldonado played by Lili Taylor, insists he return to work and pairs him up with a state-of-the-art android partner, who Kennex immediately gets rid of, only to find a new partner, an older model named Dorian, played by Michael Ealy. There’s something different about Dorian, something more human to him. He doesn’t look, act or speak like the other bots. With their part human, part robot body parts, the two connect more than they thought they would. Kennex also has to make friends with the new cops in the precinct, including Valerie Stahl, played by Minka Kelly. I love me some Friday Night Lights, but I was never a Minka fan. So we shall see. The show follows Dorian and John on a week-to-week case, as they catch criminals in this futuristic world. I would definitely tune-in to this one. It’s a Must-Watch!
Almost Human stars Karl Urban, Michael Ealy, Lili Taylor, Minka Kelly, Mackenzie Crook, and Michael Irby.

Enlisted TCA
FOX’s Enlisted is show about three brothers on an army base surrounded by a bunch of screwups. Let me start off by saying I have found the newest members of Jimmy Kimmel’s The Handsome Men’s Club! I mean, they really are handsome, and they all said so during the TCA panel last week. I’m a huge Geoff Stults fan and was really rooting for him on the Finder, but this isn’t any better. Sergeant Pete Hill, played by Stults, comes back stateside to the same base his brothers are stationed at in Florida, and is head of their platoon. The middle brother Derrick, played by Chris Lowell from Private Practice and Veronica Mars, is the fun, laid back brother who likes to have a good time and get into trouble. The youngest brother Randy, played by Parker Young from Suburgatory, is a total screwup, but wants to be GI Joe and is a bit overenthusiastic about it. Basically, Pete is in charge of a group of misfits comprised of soldiers who aren’t good enough to get sent overseas but can’t really get kicked out either. What can they really do each week? I just don’t see how this show will hold up, especially since it airs on Friday nights. Let me know what you guys think.
Enlisted stars Geoff Stults, Chris Lowell, Parker Young and Keith David
