MTV’s new original family drama Finding Carter centers around a teenage girl who finds out her entire life is a lie. Carter Stevens, played by Kathryn Prescott, attends school like any other day and discovers that she’s isn’t who she thinks she is, that her mother abducted her 13 years ago and her entire world is changed forever. Carter has to adjust to this whole new life with her biological family, including a twin sister she never knew she had, a new school and boys. According to Executive Producer Terri Minsky, Finding Carter is truly a mother-daughter tale, saying that “to me, Carter is my daughter. When she speaks, she speaks with a voice that I’ve heard all my life.” She added that many of the elements of the show grew out of her relationship with her daughter, even using some of their real-life phrases they say to each other.
Carter has been lied to by the one person she thought she could trust and hopes to find her mother Lori before the cops do. Her biological mother, played by Cynthia Watros, joined the police force after her daughter was abducted and becomes obsessed with finding the woman who stole her child and all those years away from her. Watros added that “a huge part of my character died when Carter went missing…I’m playing Elizabeth with that hard exterior and I want to show the vulnerability but I can’t do that yet.”
The mostly female panel, with the exception of Alexis Denisof who plays Carter’s biological father, talked about the roles of women in the show. Prescott chimed in by saying that the relationships between her and her two mothers are the primary storyline. Her character will have relationships with boys but “it’s not the central story line. It’s very secondary.”
