USA’s new hacker series Mr. Robot takes you on a paranoid-inducing ride, and you’ll absolutely love it.

The techno-thriller follows Elliot (Rami Malek, The Pacific), a young programmer, who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and as a vigilante hacker by night. Elliot finds himself at a crossroad when the mysterious leader of an underground hacker group (Christian Slater, The Adderall Diaries) recruits him to destroy the firm he is paid to protect. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world.

Malek does an excellent job portraying the young hacker struggling with the confines of society and barely has any emotional connections except for that of his good friend Angela (Portia Doubleday, Her). His character narrates the entirety of the pilot, leaving you unsure as to what’s real and what’s not, which kind of makes you feel like you’re losing your mind. You sort of drift into his world, believing that The Man has taken over and we’re all just a bunch of robots falling in line.

The series, which won the coveted audience award in the Episodics category at SXSW this past March, launched one of the widest pre-linear distribution plans in cable TV history for the pilot episode, one month prior to the premiere.
