Lisa Kudrow Returns to HBO as Valerie Cherish in ‘The Comeback’

Nine years later, Lisa Kudrow is back as Valerie Cherish in HBO’s comedy The Comeback. Apparently both the folks at HBO, Kudrow and co-creator Michael Patrick King were thinking about what Valerie would be doing now and decided to revive the comedy for a six-episode limited series.

Kudrow thinks “the show is still the same as it was nine years ago.” King added that “the DNA is the same…the DNA we liked about Valerie is her in front of the camera. We tried to reflect what was going on last time (the birth of reality television) and this time we wanted to evolve and now it’s a behind the scenes crew, not a reality crew.”

When asked who brought up the idea of bringing The Comeback, back first, Kudrow said “It would be too much of an emotional risk to even say it [to bring the show back]. We’re just really grateful that we get to pick it up again…and keep people up to date on what’s happening and to do it again. We loved doing it so very much!”

King added that they were “both so thrilled to be back at HBO – the reason it was polarizing was because it was allowed to be this original thing ten years ago.”

Casey Bloys, EVP of Programming, said “HBO is in a different place than it was nine years ago and we had room to bring it back. It felt like the right time, for us and for these guys.”

Michael Patrick King, who also serves as executive producer, likes the gap between the first season and this offering. “We got to bring back all of the character who we thought were essential.” He added that “they’d never seen a female character doing this to herself nine years ago, and since then there’s been the Real Housewives.

The Comeback premieres in November. You can watch the first season on HBO Go.

HBO Synopsis: “B level” TV star Valerie Cherish was a pioneer of reality television. Now, It’s ten years later – there’s more TV than ever and she wants back in. Lisa Kudrow (Emmy® winner for “Friends”) stars as the embattled Valerie Cherish, a fading TV “It Girl” who was once so desperate to stay in the spotlight that she allowed cameras to follow her every move as she appeared on a new sitcom – with disastrous results. When the comedy series THE COMEBACK returns as a new six-episode limited series, Valerie thinks she has it all figured out this time. She doesn’t. From Michael Patrick King (Emmy® winner for HBO’s “Sex and the City”) and Lisa Kudrow, who will serve as executive producer along with her producing partner, Dan Bucatinsky (Emmy® winner for “Scandal”).

TCA Summer Press Tour 2013: The CW’s New Fall Shows

On Tuesday, The CW presented their Fall TV lineup at the Television Critics Association. Check out their series premieres below. Let us know what you think!

The Originals is a spinoff of the CW’s hit show The Vampire Diaries, and follows Klaus, played by Joseph Morgan, as he travels to New Orleans after following up on a mysterious tip about a plot brewing against him. Klaus goes back to the city that his family helped build only to find his protégé, Marcel, who is now the so-called “king,” and everything goes through him, and I mean everything, including any and all witchcraft. The series is set around the original family trying to take back the power that’s rightfully theirs, including Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah, taking them away from their what-could-have-been romantic interests on TVD (although EP Julie Plec said they won’t forget about those story lines). I am a huge Vampire Diaries fan and heart Joseph Morgan, but not sure how well this spinoff will do. The backdoor pilot, which aired back in April, didn’t do well ratings wise but the CW picked it up anyways. Here’s hoping they can keep that audience. Family. Is. Power.

The Originals stars Joseph Morgan, Charles Michael Davis, Claire Holt, Daniel Gillies and Phoebe Tonkin.

Premieres Thursday, October 3, 9pm (before moving to its official time slot on Tuesday, October 8, 8pm)

For a network that dabbles a lot in the supernatural genre, there hasn’t been a lot of science-fiction. Enter The Tomorrow People. Based on the 70’s British cult show, The Tomorrow People stars Robbie Amell—yes, he’s related to the one and only Stephen of Arrow (can you believe how much they look alike? They’re cousins, not brothers, in case you were wondering)—as Steven Jamison, a Tomorrow Person. Tomorrow people represent the next stage in human evolution and have powers including telekinesis, telepathy and teleportation. The show tracks Steven as he comes to learn that he is in fact, one of these people and that his powers are growing. He finds out that there are others out there like him who are trying to fight together against a powerful group called Ultra. The show is fun and cute, and filled with good-looking people, as the CW does, but we’ll have to see what the second and third episode bring in order to keep me watching.

The Tomorrow People stars Robbie Amell, Peyton List, Mark Pellegrino, Sarah Clarke, Madeleine Mantock, Aaron Yoo and Luke Mitchell.

Premieres Wednesday, October 9, 9PM (Following the season premiere of Arrow)

Reign is like Gossip Girl meets The Tudors, only without as much sex. There are a lot of hipsters with headbands on this show, if you know what I mean. Reign is set in the 1500s in France, and focuses on the teen years of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary, who is coming of age, was promised to Francis II, the future King of  France, and is thrown into a world of back-stabbing, lies and other horrors that are far from what she grew up with. The show has cast a group of beautiful “unknowns” but the show is lacking something I can’t quite put my finger on. Many other critics out there really enjoyed the pilot, and I’ll watch the second episode but I’m not holding my breath. Also, this show isn’t really targeted towards my demo (even though I watch pretty much everything else on the CW).

Reign stars Megan Follows, Torrance Coombs, Adelaide Kane, and Toby Regbo

Premieres Thursday, October 17, 9 PM

NBC’s new drama The Blacklist is one of my favorite pilots for the upcoming Fall TV season. James Spader plays ex-government agent Redmond “Red” Harrington, who has been one of the FBI’s Most Wanted fugitives for decades. Red surrenders himself, stating that he’ll help the FBI catch a long-wanted terrorist on the condition that he deals directly with Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Keen, played by Megan Boon (Law & Order: Los Angeles). Now Keen is a rookie, straight out of Quantico for her first day on the job. Why does he choose her? What’s so special about Liz? This one is definitely worth watching.

The Blacklist stars James Spader, Megan Boone, Diego Klattenhoff, Harry Lennix and Ryan Eggold.

Premieres Monday, September 23, 10pm ET

Michael J. Fox is back on TV! If you love him on The Good Wife, you can finally catch him on the tube every week. Michael plays Mike Henry, New York’s beloved news anchor who puts his professional life on the back burner to spend more time with his family and focus on his health after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

The show takes place five years later with Mike’s former boss, played by Wendell Pierce (The Wire), wanting to get him back on the air, and shows how Mike juggles work, home and family life – just like the old days.

The Michael J. Fox Show stars Michael J. Fox, Wendell Pierce, Betsy Brandt, Conor Romero, Juliette Goglia, Jack Gore and Katie Finneran.

Premieres Thursday, September 26, 9pm ET

NBC’s new drama Ironside stars Blair Underwood as New York Detective Robert T. Ironside. But don’t confuse this Ironside with the original. ”There are three elements from the original,” says Underwood. “We took his name, Robert T. Ironside, the fact that he is a detective and the fact that he happens to be in a wheelchair.” This upcoming drama has a ton of class acts that you won’t want to miss, includingGreek alum Spencer Grammer and the ever so talented Pablo Schreiber, who is in pretty much everything at the moment, such as the Netflix hit Orange is the New Black.

Premieres Wednesday, October 2, 10pm ET

NBC’s new comedy Welcome to the Family follows Dan Yoder, played by Mike O’Malley (Glee and My Name is Earl), and his wife Caroline, played by Mary McCormick (In Plain Sight and The West Wing), as they think they are about to have free time, now that their daughter, played by Ella Rae Peck (Gossip Girl and Deception), has graduated from high school and is heading off to college. To their surprise, they find out that she is not only secretly dating a boy across town, played by Joseph Haro (Awkwardand Glee), but is pregnant AND engaged. These two families are thrown together and have to adjust to their new situation.

Welcome to the Family stars Mike O’Malley, Mary McComick, Joseph Haro, Justina Machado, Ricardo A. Chavira and Fabrizio Guido.

NBC’s new comedy Sean Saves the World follows Sean, played by Sean Hayes (Will & Grace), a divorced dad who juggles a demanding career, a pushy mom, (played by the talented Linda Lavin), and a teenage daughter who moves in full-time. Sean tries to be the best dad in the world amongst a quirky group of characters, including Ben & Kate’s Echo Kellum. Also, Thomas Lennon rocks a stache, but no short shorts for all you Reno 911 fans out there.
